Islington is a town in Greater London, England and forms the central district of the London Borough of Islington. It is an inner-city district, spanning from Islington High Street to Highbury Fields, encompassing the area around the busy Upper Street. The name is now also often applied to the areas of the borough close to Upper Street such as Barnsbury, Canonbury, and De Beauvoir Town, developed in the Georgian era.
From the 1960s, the Georgian terraces were rediscovered by middle class families and many of the houses were rehabilitated, with the area becoming newly fashionable. This displacement of the poor by the aspirational has become known as gentrification. Among these new residents were a number of the central figures in the New Labour movement, including Tony Blair before his victory in the 1997 general election. "Islington is widely regarded as the spiritual home of Britain's left-wing intelligentsia" (The Guardian). The Granita Pact between Gordon Brown and Tony Blair is said to have been made at a now defunct restaurant on Upper Street. The completion of the Victoria line and redevelopment of Angel tube station has created the conditions for developers to build blocks of small flats, popular with young professionals, intensifying use of the area. The inns of the 17th century are now replaced with busy public houses and trendy wine bars. Small shops selling bijou items are increasingly being priced out of the area and replaced by national (and international) chains. Islington remains a district in constant flux. Source: Wikipedia.
The northern and western sides around Angel, Canonbury and Highbury have some of the most impressive architecture in the form of terraces of large Georgian townhouses. These attractive facades and spacious properties, combined with close proximity to transport links (Angel and Highbury tube, and nearby Kings Cross for intercity journeys) and the nearby amenities of Upper Street make it a popular, and as a result, expensive area. Some of the most impressive homes are those around Compton Terrace. Compton Terrace is a classic example of the Georgian splendour of Islington, where properties come in the form of townhouses often having between six and nine bedrooms, with asking prices well into the millions. Slightly less expensive Georgian properties can be found in Canonbury Square, Duncan Terrace, Gerrard Road and Gibson Square. These houses tend to have 4-5 bedrooms.
At the lower end of the market and in the north-west of the area is the Marquis Estate, a 1,200 dwelling council estate, completed in 1976 on 26 acres, and designed by Darbourne & Darke. A dark red brick, traffic free estate, it was praised as an example of municipal architecture, but achieved a bad reputation and has since been extensively redeveloped to improve security for residents. Also, at the cheaper end of the property market there are high rise ex-local authority maisonettes, such as Portelet Court on the De Beauvoir Estate.
